2021 Summer Reading

2021 Summer Reading | Grades 1-6
 

Elementary students, entering grades 1-6, can participate  in an optional Summer Reading Program. While the program is not mandatory, it is greatly encouraged! Simply read the required number of books or pages (details on grade level reading list) and record on the reading log. Happy Summer Reading!

2021 Summer Reading | Grades 7-12


The upper school Summer Enrichment Reading Program includes our English, History, Bible, Business, and Social Science departments. The program is designed to encourage and reward students who pursue expanding their minds through reading over the summer months!
Summer reading assignments at ECA are optional for all students in grades 7-12 with the exception of students in Advanced Placement classes. Please consult with your Advanced Placement teacher for required summer assignments.
Students who read a minimum of one book in a category (listed below) will have the opportunity to receive up to 3% credit on their first semester grade. Only one assignment for each subject category may be submitted. Each book can only be used for one submission for one course.

  • English
  • History
  • Business
  • Social Science
Assignments will be submitted during the first two weeks of school on Canvas. Students must turn in a reading verification form at the time of submission for each book read.   
Essay Prompts for Assignments
 
Grades 7-8 Requirements
  • Write a minimum 1.5 page response to one of the following.
  • Personal Connection. Explain a personal connection that you can make with the characters or plot of your book. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book to support your claims. 
  • Biblical Connection. Discuss how your book (its plot, people, ideas, etc.) connect with Biblical passages and themes. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book to support your claims as well as specific Biblical references. 
Grades 9-10 Requirements
  • Write a minimum 2.5 page response to one of the following topics.
  • Current Event. Connect elements of your book to a recent current event. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book as well as research with a works cited page to support your claims. 
  • Character Analysis. Describe one of the main characters or people from the book. What is their motivation? How do they change throughout the course of the book? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Make a comparison to a literary character, historical person, or Biblical figure. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book to support your claims. 
Grades 11-12 Requirements
  • Write a minimum 3.5 page response to one of the following topics.
  • Symbolism. Analyze 2-3 symbols that occur throughout the book. Explain the deeper meaning of these symbols and how they connect to a larger theme within the work. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book to support your claims. 
  • Worldview. Analyze the worldview of one of the characters or people from your book. Compare and contrast this worldview with a Biblical worldview analyzing how the character’s worldview impacts his or her life. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book to support your claims. 
  • Historical Research. Research a historical element referenced in your book. For example, if your book takes place in the 1920s, choose and research an element related to that decade. Analyze how this element plays an important role in your book. Incorporate specific examples with page numbers from the book as well as a works cited page.
